South Beach Diet
If you have been considering going on a diet, you might want to think about using the South Beach Diet in order to accomplish your goals. The South Beach Diet originated from a book called The South Beach Diet: The Delicious, Doctor-Designed, Foolproof Plan for Fast and Healthy Weight Loss by Dr. Arthur Agatston, a cardiologist from south Florida. Originally the diet was developed by Dr. Agatston for the purpose of treating chronically overweight heart patients. Since then, it became quite popular in Miami and then all over the world.
There are three different phases in the South Beach Diet. The first phase, which lasts for two weeks, is the strictest phases and includes only very specific foods; which can be found on the Foods to Enjoy list. Foods which are on the no-no list include highly processed foods such as soft drinks and baked goods as well as potatoes, pasta, sugar, rise, fruit and alcohol. Foods which are approved include fish, turkey, chicken, eggs and shell fish. Cheese, nuts and vegetables are also on the approved list. The diet focuses on a healthy balance between fats and carbs. It is believed that this balance will help metabolize the foods you take in more effectively, which will then improve insulin resistance and lead to weight loss. In this regard, the diet is related to the Glycemic Index. According to Dr. Agatston, it is possible to lose between eight and thirteen pounds just in the first two weeks of the diet.
After the first two weeks, you can move on to the next phase of the diet and begin to reintroduce some of the previously excluded foods into your diet. It should be noted that individuals who have significant amounts of weight to lose might wish to stay on Phase 1 for longer than two weeks; however, this is not a long-term goal.
During Phase 2 of the South Beach diet, the individual may choose which previously excluded foods they wish to add back into their diet. It is important to note that not all foods should be re-introduced, but it is left up to the dieter’s discretion to determine which foods they would like to add. Re-introduced foods should be added back in moderation.
The final phase of the diet is the least restrictive and is meat to become a way of life that the individual can continue in order to maintain their weight loss.
