Tips for Walking
Considering starting a walking routine? Before you head out the front door, be sure you read the tips below to make sure you know everything you should in order to avoid possible injury and receive the most from your new exercise routine.
First, always be sure that you speak with your doctor before beginning an exercise routine, even if it is walking for fitness. This is true, especially, if you have not been physically active for some time. Only start a walking regime once you have approval from your physician.
When you are first getting started walking your regular tennis shoes will work just fine; however, once you have kicked up your routine a notch or two it is a good idea to invest in a good quality pair of sneakers. That’s not to say that you need to spend a small fortune but do make sure that you obtain a pair with food support and comfort, of course.
Always try to plot a good course before you start out on your walking regime. Possibilities include your own neighborhood as well as a walking track at a nearby park or even the mall. The possibilities are almost unlimited, but do take the time to choose a location that will be enjoyable for you because this will help you to become more successful.
Do make a commitment to your walking routine. It needs to be a priority in your life or it will be far too easy to allow other things override it and the next thing you know your walking routine will be a thing of the past.
Keep in mind, especially if you choose an outdoor location, that it’s always a good idea to have a plan B in the event of rain, etc.
Start slow and easy, especially if you haven’t worked out in a while. If you can only do ten minutes at first, don’t beat yourself up over it. This is fine. Commit to what you can do and then work on increasing it gradually.
Pace yourself. Ideally, it’s a good idea to try to work your way up to five times a week but when you’re just starting out do what you can and then increase your pace.
Finally, don’t be surprised if you are somewhat sore following your first day of walking. This is to be expected but don’t allow it to get the best of you. If you feel it is necessary, take a regular pain reliever and then head back out. Taking the time to stretch beforehand should help.
